Welcome to the first edition of a new monthly column from Nova UA Federal Credit Union, written for the Ukrainian American community and the neighbors who bank alongside us. Each month we will share plain, practical guidance on money, family, and building a secure financial life. We are starting where our story starts, with the community that shaped us.

Rooted in the Ukrainian American community

Nova UA Federal Credit Union was founded to serve the Ukrainian American community here in New Jersey, and that purpose still guides everything we do. For generations, credit unions like ours grew out of a simple idea. People who share roots, values, and a language can pool their savings and help one another get ahead. That is not a marketing line for us. It is who we are.

Being member owned means our members are not customers to be sold to. You are part owner of the credit union, and your best interest guides our decisions. When you bank with Nova UA, your money stays close to home and helps a neighbor buy a first car, open a business, or send a child to school.

Service that understands your needs

Money is personal, and it is easier to talk about when the person across the table understands where you come from. Our Member Services Team works with members who share these roots every day, so questions about family, documents, or getting started here are met with patience and respect, not a blank stare.

Whether you have banked with us for decades or you arrived recently, you can always talk to our member services and get a real answer from a real person. That relationship is the heart of what a community credit union offers.

Safe ways to support family abroad

For many of our members, helping family abroad is one of the most important things money can do. It matters that those transfers are safe, that fees are clear, and that funds arrive where they should. Nova UA offers international wires, both outgoing and incoming, and our Member Services Team is glad to walk you through the secure options available to members and help you choose the one that fits your situation.

For fast, low cost transfers between people here in the US, many members also use Zelle through our digital banking. Zelle is for domestic transfers only. In order to use Zelle you must have a checking account and enroll in billpay. To send support to family in another country, an international wire is the direct option through Nova UA, and some members also use third party services such as Western Union, Venmo, or PayPal by linking their accounts. If you are weighing how to send support abroad, please talk to our member services so we can point you to the right and safest path.

Building a financial life here, step by step

If you are newer to the country, opening your first account can feel like a hurdle. It should not be. Nova UA accepts a Social Security number or an ITIN to open an account and become a member, so you do not need to wait to start saving, building history, and protecting your money. An account with us is a foundation you can build on. As your status here develops, more products open up. Members without permanent status can apply for a secured credit card, and loans and mortgages are available to borrowers who have a Green Card or U.S. citizenship along with a valid Social Security number.

We will cover these first steps in much more detail in future editions. For now, know that a welcoming door is open whenever you are ready.
